Chan Jr., known as Art Chan, his wife, Christine C. Chan, and Michael L. Marasigan received prison sentences and were ordered to pay restitution, according to court records.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>A jury on May 13 convicted the three of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, money laundering conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Christine Chan and Marasigan were also convicted of multiple counts of money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>Chan, 77, of Dededo, was sentenced May 12 to 60 months in federal prison. He was ordered to pay $10,750,804 in restitution, jointly and severally with his co-defendants, to the Aloha Shriners. He was also ordered to forfeit $339,013 and pay a $300 special assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Christine Chan, 64, of Dededo, was sentenced May 12 to 70 months in federal prison. She was ordered to pay $10,750,804 in restitution, jointly and severally with her co-defendants, to the Aloha Shriners. He was ordered to pay $10,750,804 in restitution, jointly and severally with his co-defendants, to the Aloha Shriners. He was also ordered to forfeit $5,871,493 and pay a $6,500 special assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence at trial showed that from March 2015 through Dec. 31, 2021, the defendants and others carried out a fraud scheme and illegal gambling operation involving the Guam Shrine Club and its Hafa Adai Bingo parlor, court records said.<\/p>\n<p>The Guam Shrine Club is a nonprofit organization that said it helped cover travel expenses for children and a parent or guardian to receive medical care, court records said. Prosecutors said the defendants misled bingo patrons by claiming proceeds would be used for charitable purposes.<\/p>\n<p>During the scheme, Hafa Adai Bingo generated about $34 million in gross proceeds, court records said. Prosecutors said the defendants diverted and laundered $10,750,804 that should have gone to the Aloha Shriners, which has Shrine jurisdiction over Guam.<\/p>\n<p>Bank records show that from 2015 through 2020, about $140,378 in proceeds was paid to the Aloha Shriners and used for air transportation, court records said.
