HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – New research suggests Hawaii could once again produce its own rice\u2014potentially strengthening the state\u2019s food security.<\/p>\n

A study by researchers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology found high-quality Japanese rice varieties can thrive in Hawaii using traditional irrigation systems, rather than flooded paddies.<\/p>\n

Researchers grew two short-grain rice varieties in Kapaa, Kauai, during the summer of 2025. The crops produced yields comparable to those in Japan and reached maturity in just 97 days\u2014more than a month faster than crops grown in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was an excellent start to the collaborative research to explore the potential of bringing back rice farming to Hawaii,\u201d said Professor Tomoaki Miura of UH Manoa\u2019s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience.<\/p>\n

The study also found Hawaii\u2019s climate produced heavier grains with a high whole-grain ratio and lower protein content\u2014qualities associated with softer, stickier rice.<\/p>\n

Hawaii currently imports all of its rice, about 140 million pounds each year. Researchers said establishing local rice production could play an important role in strengthening the state\u2019s food security.<\/p>\n
