HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Federal authorities say an Indian national was arrested in Honolulu on Monday for his alleged role in a scheme that pressured an elderly woman to turn over gold bars worth more than $137,000.<\/p>\n

U.S. Attorney Ken Sorenson said Harsh Fojalal Shah was arrested July 20 and charged by criminal complaint with conspiracy to commit wire fraud.<\/p>\n

According to the complaint, investigators say Shah served as a courier in a \u201cgold bar purchase\u201d scam in which conspirators impersonated U.S. Marshals and told the victim, identified as \u201cJane Doe,\u201d her identity had been compromised. Prosecutors say the scammers used fear, secrecy and high-pressure tactics to convince her to liquidate savings and buy gold as a supposed way to protect her money.<\/p>\n

Authorities said Doe ultimately handed over nine gold bars valued at more than $137,000. Investigators said the conspirators then pushed her to liquidate her retirement account for an additional $429,000 before law enforcement intervened.<\/p>\n

Investigators later set up a controlled operation using prop gold, according to the complaint. On Sunday, Shah allegedly arrived at a meeting location in Kaneohe, gave Doe a one-dollar bill as a confirmation \u201cpassword,\u201d and accepted a box he believed contained 10 gold bars.<\/p>\n

After the meeting, Shah was observed driving in what investigators described as evasive maneuvers around Honolulu before he was arrested, officials said. During a post-arrest interview, Shah admitted he had carried out about 10 similar pickups from older adults over the past several months, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe alleged gold bar scheme here underscores a growing national trend in which organized criminal networks prey upon older Americans using impersonation, high-pressure tactics, and isolation to steal their life savings,\u201d Sorenson said in a statement. He credited the victim for coming forward and said authorities will \u201caggressively\u201d pursue those who target Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s kupuna.<\/p>\n

CJ Ammons, acting special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations, said the agency is focused on dismantling criminal groups that prey on vulnerable community members.<\/p>\n

Lt. Kawananakoa Saul of the Honolulu Police Department said the case shows those who victimize the community \u201cwill be relentlessly pursued.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tom Alipio, chief of the Hawaii Attorney General\u2019s Investigation Division, warned criminals are using technology to impersonate law enforcement officers and said agencies will continue working together to identify those responsible.<\/p>\n

Authorities urged older adults and families to be skeptical of unexpected calls, texts or emails claiming accounts are compromised or demanding secrecy. Officials said legitimate government agencies will not instruct people to buy gold, gift cards or cryptocurrency to safeguard their identity, and encouraged people to verify any suspicious message by contacting an agency or company using an official phone number.<\/p>\n

If convicted, Shah could spend up to 20 years in prison and be fined up to $250,000, plus supervised release, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office noted the charge is an accusation and that Shah is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.<\/p>\n

Homeland Security Investigations is investigating with assistance from HPD and the Hawai\u02bbi Attorney General\u2019s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mohammad Khatib is prosecuting the case.<\/p>\n
