{"id":2941,"date":"2026-07-23T09:34:48","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T09:34:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2941"},"modified":"2026-07-23T09:34:48","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T09:34:48","slug":"california-family-totally-overwhelmed-after-large-fight-at-kaanapali-resort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2941","title":{"rendered":"California family \u2018totally overwhelmed\u2019 after large fight at Kaanapali resort"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; A California family says a vacation in West Maui turned traumatic after a large fight at a Kaanapali resort left several people injured, including one man who suffered a severe head wound that required 13 staples.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2939\">HPD says officer discharged firearm at \u2018large pit bull\u2019 in Kalaeloa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The incident happened Friday night at the Kaanapali Alii resort. <\/p>\n<p>Maui police said approximately 30 people were involved in a disturbance in the resort\u2019s barbecue area, and at least six people suffered injuries serious enough to require medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Police have arrested one person, a 20-year-old Makawao man, on suspicion of assault. The investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Family members who spoke exclusively with Hawaii News Now said the violence began earlier in the evening near Whalers Village, where they allege a group of Maui youths began harassing visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were three females, one of which was the ringleader,\u201d said family member Joseph Headfield. \u201cShe got up in people\u2019s faces, said, \u2018We\u2019re going to beat up your boys tonight. We\u2019re going to beat up the haole boys.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relatives said two teenagers later ran to a family asking for help, but the group allegedly followed them back to the resort and began attacking people.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel, another family member who witnessed the incident, said he immediately moved children away from the area when tensions escalated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe got up and just started screaming, \u2018They\u2019re going to fight. They\u2019re going to fight,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAs soon as I heard that, I got my son out of there. My wife followed me and a few others immediately got up and left the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite those efforts, several members of the family were allegedly assaulted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I immediately took them out of the patio area,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cBy the time I came back, I saw one individual just getting beaten up on the ground, defenseless, by multiple people. And maybe 20, 30 seconds later, they were all running away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said multiple family members were \u201cslapped, punched, kicked\u201d during the chaos.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>One of the most seriously injured victims was a man whose family members said was trying to protect relatives when he was struck in the head with a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids were beating people with the chairs,\u201d Headfield said.<\/p>\n<p>Photos provided to Hawaii News Now show a large gash on the man\u2019s head. Family members said he also suffered injuries to other parts of his body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rest of his body took a beating too,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Julie, another family member, said hearing what the alleged attackers said afterward was especially disturbing.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2938\">21 students graduate from Hawaii Carpenters\u2019 construction internship program<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticularly our cousin-in-law who got the 13 staples, they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, we got the old man,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cSo they were doing it intentionally. They were looking for trouble, did it on purpose, followed, picked out a group, I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family believes the attack was racially motivated and should be investigated as a hate crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur group consisted of ages from 85 to 11,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cWe were just not expecting any of this. We were on a private resort property, and we were just overwhelmed, completely, totally overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Family members said none of the 30-plus relatives traveling together had experienced anything like it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of us, none of the 30 people that were there, has had this happen before,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cTwo of us were sent to the hospital and multiple others were treated at the scene by EMTs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family said the incident has overshadowed what was supposed to be a memorable vacation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was really badly hurt,\u201d Julie said of the man who suffered the head injury. \u201cHe was told to stay out of the sun. Everything he came to Hawaii to do, he can\u2019t do.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt just kind of overshadowed our whole trip,\u201d she added. \u201cWe\u2019re definitely still talking about it every day.
