Josh Green said the federal government does not understand $1 military land leases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there is a threat from the outside, it is the federal government\u2019s approach to the Hawaiian people,\u201d Green said.<\/p>\n<p>Green called for the return of M\u0101kua Valley to the Hawaiian people and cited a milestone reported on the convention\u2019s opening day \u2014 the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands awarding 477 O\u02bbahu leases.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis is today\u2019s front page \u2014 DHHL awards 477 O\u02bbahu leases \u2014 and as you know that is just the tip of the iceberg,\u201d Green said.<\/p>\n<p><b>LEARN MORE:<\/b> Native Hawaiian Convention returns to Honolulu with workshops, marketplace<\/p>\n<h2>Organizations speak to threats and path forward<\/h2>\n<p>Leaders from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, Papa Ola L\u014dkahi and Kamehameha Schools also addressed threats to their organizations and discussed moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>Kamehameha Schools CEO Jack Wong said the litigation against the school goes beyond its Native Hawaiian admissions preference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe subject of our litigation is our preference for Native Hawaiians. Blaisdell Center, the Hawaiian Council displayed 133 hae Hawai\u02bbi \u2014 Hawaiian flags \u2014 representing 133 years since what organizers described as the illegal occupation and organizers say it\u2019s been a conversation starter.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt makes me feel like, oh my gosh, wow \u2014 there are really people fighting for our culture,\u201d said Kau\u02bbi Joaquin, a Kamehameha Schools Maui student. \u201cIt really shows there are \u02bb\u014diwi leaders in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Student attendees from Kamehameha Schools Maui said the convention left them feeling more informed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur community is very important. Our voices need to be heard and I think it\u2019s important for us to build a foundation because we are the next generation,\u201d Kayla Baptist, a Kamehameha Schools Maui student.<\/p>\n<p>The Native Hawaiian Convention continues Wednesday.
