{"id":277,"date":"2026-05-19T05:35:34","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T05:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=277"},"modified":"2026-05-19T05:35:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T05:35:34","slug":"holy-ghost-feast-celebrates-133-years-on-maui","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=277","title":{"rendered":"Holy Ghost Feast celebrates 133 years on Maui"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>KULA (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; The Holy Ghost Feast returns to Maui this weekend, marking 133 years of the tradition on the island.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=275\">Murder trial begins for Larry Millete in death of Radford grad Maya Millete<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Holy Ghost Mission, the octagonal-shaped Catholic church in Kula, will host the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s small, but it\u2019s very touching in a sense that you can see the unity of the people,\u201d said Father Anton Nyo.<\/p>\n<h2>Origins in Portugal<\/h2>\n<p>The feast began in the 13th century in the Azores, according to Mary Ann Turek, co-chair of the 133rd Holy Ghost Feast.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Azores were being plagued with earthquake, famine. They were devastated, especially the island of Pico, and so the people got together and prayed to the Holy Ghost,\u201d Turek said. \u201cOn Pentecost Sunday morning, a huge ship arrived with stuff to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Portugal\u2019s Queen hosted a feast every year in thanksgiving. <\/p>\n<p>The Portuguese brought the tradition to Maui when they migrated in the 1800s.<\/p>\n<h2>Weekend events<\/h2>\n<p>This weekend\u2019s celebration will include fresh malasadas, a free meal, live music, a farmer\u2019s market and plant sale, a small goods auction and a live animal auction.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=273\">Crisis teams use new law to get mentally ill homeless into treatment on Oahu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The livestock auction dates back to 1894, said parishioner Leina Shirota-Purdy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe farmers and the ranchers would get together weekly in order to have livestock auctions,\u201d Shirota-Purdy said. \u201cThe monies raised for the livestock auction was put together to help for the building of the Holy Ghost Church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The church is also incorporating traditions that have been lost along the way. <\/p>\n<p>Parishioners, along with the Portuguese Association of Maui, created a charola. The display includes fruit, vegetables, eggs and wine as symbols.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe fruit and vegetables, they all are a symbol of God\u2019s gifts to us.
