HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The National Park Service is urging drivers to slow down after a n\u0113n\u0113 (Hawaiian goose) and an \u2018ua\u2018u (Hawaiian petrel) were hit and killed Sunday within Haleakal\u0101 National Park.<\/p>\n

Both birds are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. The n\u0113n\u0113 is also Hawai\u2018i\u2019s state bird.<\/p>\n

NPS managers encourage the public to drive at or below the speed limit and remain vigilant for native wildlife on park roads.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know from our traffic data that it\u2019s not just visitors but locals who speed too,\u201d said park superintendent Natalie Gates. \u201cThese birds have nowhere else to go, and it is our kuleana to protect them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The park service said in just four years, 11 n\u0113n\u0113 and 13 \u2018ua\u2018u were killed by motorists in the park.<\/p>\n
