HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Nestled in north shore Maui\u2019s wuthering cliffs, M\u0101liko Bay has served boaters and fishers for generations. <\/p>\n

While often overlooked, the narrow bay plays a big role for first responders who rely on its ramp. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a critical spot on the north shore. Kahului boat ramp is about nine miles away … so if there are any critical rescues needed at Ho\u02bbokipa, or further up north of M\u0101liko, this is a critical spot for their access to get jet skis in the water,\u201d longtime fisher and ramp user Ben Walin said. <\/p>\n

Built in the \u201970s, the state granted public access to the ramp through an easement, which expired in 1997, leaving maintenance uncertain. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Since then, Walin said the site has been neglected and became a hot spot for illegal dumping. <\/p>\n

In March, Walin said the Kona low storms \u201cbasically ripped out about half of (the ramp).\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoping to restore the area for ocean activities, emergency purposes, and cultural practices, Walin and a new nonprofit organization assumed management of the bay.<\/p>\n

N\u0101 Maka o M\u0101liko consists of boaters, community advocates, and lineal descendants invested in reviving the well-used facility and the 11-plus acres around it under a 50-year lease. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s part of our heritage. It is the stories that we have and we\u2019ve held and cherished,\u201d N\u0101 Maka o M\u0101liko president Pulama Collier shared.<\/p>\n

For Collier, the cherished stories connecting her and her family to M\u0101liko motivate her to guide the group under a traditional maxim, \u201cE ho\u2019i i ka nani i M\u0101liko.\u201d The motto translates as, \u201cLet glory return to M\u0101liko.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group\u2019s effort is estimated to cost around $1 million, and the County of Maui executed a $15,000 grant to N\u0101 Maka o M\u0101liko for cleanup this year. <\/p>\n

To help its mission materialize, the organization is also asking others to help them fix the facility they consider a fixture in their community. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s our legacy,\u201d Collier said. \u201cWe can feel its pain. We can feel its degradation and its lack of breath.\u201d<\/p>\n

N\u0101 Maka o M\u0101liko aims to breath new life into the bay by hosting community work days.<\/p>\n

HNN reached out to the Department of Land and Natural Resources for comment and we\u2019re waiting to hear back. <\/p>\n
