{"id":2388,"date":"2026-07-09T05:34:50","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T05:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2388"},"modified":"2026-07-09T05:34:50","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T05:34:50","slug":"a-dream-come-true-for-all-of-us-hawaii-pacific-welcomes-first-flag-football-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2388","title":{"rendered":"\u2018A dream come true for all of us\u2019: Hawaii Pacific welcomes first flag football coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; Kanda Korver is still pinching herself after being named the inaugural head coach of Hawaii Pacific University\u2019s women\u2019s flag football team.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2386\">DEA moves to ban \u2018gas station heroin\u2019 sold openly in Hawaii<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Korver comes from a diverse coaching and leadership background, growing up in California before moving to Hawaii to be with family.<\/p>\n<p>A former collegiate volleyball player, Korver was an assistant coach for the Kamehameha Kapalama flag program in its first two seasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a learning experience for everyone all around,\u201d Korver told Hawaii News Now. \u201cI think as the sport grows &#8230; it\u2019s going to be fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Korver is also the director of operations at Keiki Coders and the founder of Kore Vibration, an organization that develops athletes through mental training and other workshops.<\/p>\n<p>Korver says she plans to emphasize that same mental training within her Sharks program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the immediate goal is to really build a strong foundation,\u201d Korver said. \u201cSo this is the inaugural season. It\u2019s an honor to be part of this, but everything that we\u2019re building towards is for elevating all local athletes here on the island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HPU is the first college in the state to offer flag football, giving local athletes the chance to continue playing the sport at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust giving the opportunity increases equity for more wahine athletes to play sports at any collegiate level,\u201d Korver said. \u201cSo allowing athletes to have that vision, that hope, that dream that if they want to stay home, there\u2019s a place for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2384\">California man sentenced for drug trafficking, money laundering conspiracy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While Korver is in the process of building this team, long-term, she feels that HPU can be the premier program in this emerging sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there is just so much talent on this island, we should be making Hawaii an international hub for flag football,\u201d Korver said.<\/p>\n<p>Collegiate flag football is on a path to becoming an NCAA championship sport and will make its Olympic debut in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Korver hopes HPU is at the center of that rapid expansion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the overall momentum of female sports in general, it makes sense right?\u201d Korver said. \u201cThe timing is here, the place is now, so why not make it here in Hawaii.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is HPU\u2019s 11th women\u2019s sport in their catalog, helping perpetuate former Congresswoman Patsy T.
