{"id":2357,"date":"2026-07-08T08:34:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T08:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2357"},"modified":"2026-07-08T08:34:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T08:34:43","slug":"h-1-freeway-to-shut-down-overnight-saturday-for-bridge-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2357","title":{"rendered":"H-1 Freeway to shut down overnight Saturday for bridge installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; Part of the H-1 Freeway will be fully closed to traffic this weekend while crews work on the Gulick Avenue overpass.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2356\">Temporary pedestrian bridge installation to close part of H-1 Saturday<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bridge is part of the state\u2019s $100 million federally funded H-1 widening project.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the upcoming closure will run between the Middle Street merge and the Likelike Highway off-ramp for an overnight length of time on Saturday, July 11.<\/p>\n<p>Crews will be deploying a temporary pedestrian bridge while they begin the demolition and reconstruction of the Gulick Avenue overpass.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis temporary bridge is helping shape the future overpass,\u201d Hawaii Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen said. \u201cIt\u2019s also going to make the route safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From 8 p.m. Saturday, to 8 a.m. Sunday, H-1 will be fully closed in that area to complete the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Crews will be using heavy equipment and rollers to push the bridge from the makai base to the mauka base.\u202f<\/p>\n<p>The following ramps will be closed during this work:<\/p>\n<p>Eastbound motorists will be detoured via Middle Street to parallel roadways, like North King Street, Dillingham Boulevard, or North School Street.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the expected traffic disruptions, nearby residents and workers say they support the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could be a lot safer than this busy traffic bridge,\u201d nearby worker Andy Hur said. \u201cI think it\u2019d definitely be a safer option for the kids and make it easier for the homeowners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2354\">West Maui Sports &amp; Fishing Supply reopens in Lahaina nearly 3 years after fire<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Beckley Street resident Tianasan Miguel said many students walk through the area to get to Farrington High School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the morning, there\u2019s a lot of foot traffic, so I think it\u2019s a good thing,\u201d Miguel said.<\/p>\n<p>Once installed, the bridge will be open to pedestrians, bicyclists and motorized scooter riders.<\/p>\n<p>Westbound motorists will be detoured via the Likelike Highway off-ramp to parallel roadways, like Dillingham Boulevard or North School Street.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The detours will lead back to H-1 after the construction zone. <\/p>\n<p>The estimated completion date for the Eastbound H-1 Freeway Improvements Project is February 2028, weather permitting. <\/p>\n<p>The temporary bridge will be partially launched over the eastbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway on the evening of Monday, July 6, which will only cause a partial closure of the roadway. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to be detouring everybody on parallel routes,\u201d Sniffen said. \u201cWe\u2019re working with the city to make sure that we optimize timing of our signals to minimize any impacts to drivers.
