HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – With fireworks displays and backyard celebrations in full swing this weekend, the Hawaiian Humane Society recommends pet owners keep pets indoors.<\/p>\n

Loud sounds and bright lights can cause stress and anxiety in animals, often triggering a fight-or-flight response.<\/p>\n

\u201cPets have such acute senses of hearing. Loud explosions, fireworks sounds, flashes of light, all of those are amplified for a dog or a cat, or even small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas,\u201d said Brandy Shimabukuro, Hawaiian Humane Society director of communications and marketing.<\/p>\n

The Hawaiian Humane Society recommends the following:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they hear fireworks, you\u2019d be surprised at the lengths that a pet will go to try to get away when they feel like their life is in danger,\u201d said Shimabukuro. \u201cAccidents do happen and we recognize that, so try to prepare as much as you can in advance.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hawaiian Humane Society says never medicate or sedate your pet without first consulting with a licensed veterinarian, and ensure your pet is microchipped and that the microchip is registered with your most current contact information.<\/p>\n

If a pet does get lost, acting immediately is critical. The Hawaiian Humane Society recommends staying close to home, calling family and friends for support, and filing a lost pet report.<\/p>\n
