Officials did not specify what the material contained, though neighbors say they were told by golf course staff it included horse manure.<\/p>\n<p>Residents say the smell has been overwhelming.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like, your nose is burning, your throat hurts. Getting a headache from the smell because it\u2019s so strong at some point,\u201d said Jerrica Parrish.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac Gomes described the odor as \u201csomething dead\u201d and \u201cdecomposing,\u201d adding that he has also seen dead animals in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI end up seeing dead chickens and mongooses over there,\u201d Gomes said. \u201cThey eat it, then not good for them, get sick, die right there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Residents say the odor has been especially difficult over the past week for kupuna and those with health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandma that lives with us,\u201d Gomes said. \u201cShe\u2019s always saying the smell is terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teruya Kahanamoku said the situation has been particularly hard on older residents and those with respiratory illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2153\">Supreme Court ruling on campaign spending may not affect Hawaii as much \u2014 for now<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very upsetting because you\u2019re dealing with kupunas now,\u201d she said. \u201cThey depend on the air con\u2026 and for them to go through this like this\u2026 it is very, it ****** you off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A city spokesperson provided the following statement:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><i>\u201cThe City is aware of concerns from residents regarding odors near Ewa Villages Golf Course and appreciates the community bringing them to our attention.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>After reviewing the situation with golf course staff, we confirmed the odor originated from a recent delivery of organic fertilizer. The material was temporarily staged near Hole No. 1, which is adjacent to nearby homes. Once staff were made aware of the concerns, they immediately removed the remaining fertilizer from the area closest to residences. As a result, the odor has significantly diminished and should no longer be noticeable.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>There is no City requirement for golf courses to notify neighboring residents before the routine application of fertilizers or soil amendments.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>We appreciate the community\u2019s patience as we addressed the issue and are reviewing our procedures to help prevent similar situations in the future.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>However, residents say the impact had already taken a toll and wish they had been notified ahead of time.<\/p>\n<p>Salvador Pecson said, \u201cIt affects us.
