HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Hawaii teacher\u2019s custom-made swimsuit is now on display at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.<\/p>\n

Brittany Beauchan designed the swimsuit with a teammate in 2008, when she was swimming for UCLA, as a creative way to show support for then-candidate Barack Obama. \u201cWe had discussed how could we show our support\u2026 in a way that was creative and also reflective of who we were,\u201d Beauchan said.<\/p>\n

Twelve years later, Beauchan found the suit during a COVID-era deep clean. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was doing a deep clean of my house\u2026 and I found my suit. And it felt too important to just throw it away and throw it in the trash,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

When she learned the Obama Presidential Library was looking for grassroots artifacts, \u201cyou could send a pin, a button, whatever\u2026 it was just this big call,\u201d she submitted the swimsuit for consideration.<\/p>\n

Beauchan said she didn\u2019t know it would actually be displayed until the center\u2019s soft opening. \u201cI didn\u2019t actually find out if my swimsuit was going to be used\u2026 until they invited me to the soft opening\u2026 they really kept it under wraps,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The suit stood out among more typical campaign memorabilia. \u201cI think the swimsuit was something that was very different because everything was like a pin or a T-shirt,\u201d Beauchan said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t conceive of, \u2018oh yeah, you can campaign while you\u2019re in the water or while you\u2019re at swim practice.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Beauchan and Obama also share a connection to Hawaii; both are Punahou School graduates. Beauchan said she hopes to see the display in person within the next year. \u201cI\u2019m hoping within the next year or so that I can actually go and see the swimsuit,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
