{"id":2114,"date":"2026-07-02T13:06:37","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T13:06:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2114"},"modified":"2026-07-02T13:06:37","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T13:06:37","slug":"new-sony-championship-hawaii-golf-tournament-to-debut-at-waialae-in-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2114","title":{"rendered":"New Sony Championship Hawaii golf tournament to debut at Waialae in 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; Starting next January, the PGA TOUR\u2019s Sony Open in Hawaii will be replaced at Waialae Country Club by a PGA TOUR Champions event.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2112\">Suspect charged in connection with 2 Makiki bank robberies<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know some people have said that, you know, the PGA TOUR was abandoning Hawaii and we don\u2019t look at it that way,\u201d PGA TOUR Champions president Miller Brady told Hawaii News Now. \u201cWe look at that, we\u2019re able to continue golf and really thankful to Sony for stepping up and being our partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newly named Sony Championship Hawaii will be held the week of Jan. 11 and features a $3 million purse.<\/p>\n<p>PGA TOUR Champions consists of professional golfers age 50 and older, including 35 members of the World Golf Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The field will consist of 78 PGA TOUR Champion players from across the world. Pro-am competitions will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by competition rounds from Thursday through Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime golf analyst and Maui resident Mark Rolfing says that this is a vital step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSony basically saved golf on the island of Oahu, as far as I\u2019m concerned and the most amazing part about it is, it\u2019s the same week as the Sony Open was, so there is no PGA Tour event that week,\u201d Rolfing said. \u201cWe are starting the golf season on Oahu, unencumbered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2111\">Judge orders temporary halt to Kauai housing project<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All three rounds will be televised on the Golf Channel.<\/p>\n<p>Waialae Country Club has hosted the PGA TOUR\u2019s Sony Open in Hawaii every year since 1965.<\/p>\n<p>This will also continue to strengthen the Hawaii Tourism Authority\u2019s campaign to make Hawaii a sports destination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to put numbers on something like that because when people watch a golf tournament or something that\u2019s happening in Hawaii,\u201d Director James Tokioka said. \u201cYou know, they\u2019re in the Midwest, it\u2019s freezing, they\u2019re in the East Coast, it\u2019s freezing and when they see that, they want to come to Hawaii.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the 28 years that Sony has been an event partner, the company contributed more than $27 million to Hawaii nonprofit organizations, benefiting local families in need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake a meaningful impact in the community, both short term and long-term,\u201d Brady said. \u201cWe look forward to making this a really long run of the continued professional golf on Oahu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=2109\">UH Manoa community welcomes new chancellor<\/a><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The former Sony Open in Hawaii is being replaced by a PGA TOUR Champions event with a $3 million purse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2113,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2114","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
