VOLCANO (HawaiiNewsNow) – Thirty homes in Volcano on Hawaii Island received new water catchment diverters to help protect their water supply amid Kilauea\u2019s ongoing eruption.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, plumbers and apprentices volunteered their time to install free water catchment diverters that allow homeowners to temporarily redirect rainwater away from their storage tanks.<\/p>\n

The diverters help prevent homes\u2019 water supplies from being contaminated when volcanic ash and tephra mix with runoff on rooftops.<\/p>\n

Plumbers and Fitters UA Local 675 and the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials partnered with the nonprofit Vibrant Hawai\u02bbi to complete the installations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen challenges arise, our communities have always found ways to care for one another,\u201d said Janice Ikeda, CEO of Vibrant Hawaii. \u201cIt is a reminder that resilience is built through relationships and people willing to share their time, knowledge, and expertise in service to their community.\u201d<\/p>\n
