HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – In Hawai\u2018i, July 4 carries two different historical meanings.<\/p>\n

For years, the Kingdom of Hawai\u2018i observed America\u2019s Independence Day \u2014 a tradition reflected in old newspaper headlines.<\/p>\n

But after Queen Lili\u02bbuokalani was overthrown and the Republic of Hawai\u2018i was established on July 4, 1894, many observe the date as a way to remember a kingdom that was taken from her people.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a Hawaiian, it makes me very emotional and one day, I look forward to the relationship of the Hawaiian flag to the American flag to be put back in a rightful place,\u201d said Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong, a Hawaiian community leader.<\/p>\n

Others plan to mark the holiday with events tied to America\u2019s 250th birthday.<\/p>\n

Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts \u2014 which operates the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Sheraton Waikiki, Moana Surfrider, and Sheraton Princess Kaiulani \u2014 will host Fourth of July weekend events, including fireworks, food and Americana music.<\/p>\n

The day begins on Waik\u012bk\u012b Beach with the annual Walter J. Macfarlane Memorial Canoe Regatta.<\/p>\n

Micah Suderman, Sheraton Waikiki general manager, encouraged kama\u02bb\u0101ina to arrive early, saying crowds are expected because of the America 250 celebration.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just an amazing time to just unplug, refresh yourself, treat yourself,\u201d Suderman said. \u201cEnjoy it. Let your kids experience it and really show them why Waik\u012bk\u012b became such a special place in the heart of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suderman said Sheraton Waikiki will offer lunch specials, with an Americana band scheduled to play from 3 to 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

As night falls, the Waik\u012bk\u012b fireworks show will serve as the weekend\u2019s main celebration.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really is one of a kind and it\u2019s amazing for us to reconnect with that, that beautiful place that these beaches have, all the stories these beaches have told for generations,\u201d Suderman said.<\/p>\n
