{"id":1965,"date":"2026-06-29T07:34:55","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T07:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1965"},"modified":"2026-06-29T07:34:55","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T07:34:55","slug":"family-friends-celebrate-the-life-of-coach-larry-price","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1965","title":{"rendered":"Family, friends celebrate the life of coach Larry Price"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; It was a Sunday afternoon dedicated to the life of Dr. Larry Price.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1963\">Fireworks, firecracker permits available across Hawaii<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Price died on March 27 and was 91 years old.<\/p>\n<p>He was a prolific figure in Hawaii from his years as a broadcaster and on the football field.<\/p>\n<p>Price\u2019s playing career went from Roosevelt to the University of Hawaii, where he was a three-time team captain and a stint with the Los Angeles Rams.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>He later became the head coach of the Rainbows from 1974 to 1976.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoach Price was a real warrior,\u201d Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said. \u201cIt was about never giving up, it was about believing in yourself, it was about being humble enough to recognize that we\u2019re all human, but then what do we do with that? How do we overcome that? How do we compel ourselves to excellence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Blangiardi played for Coach Price, then eventually joined his coaching staff, creating a bond that the mayor says was never broken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoach Price and I go back to 1965 when I played for him and then subsequently coached with him,\u201d Blangiardi said. \u201cHe has been my lifelong coach, my friend, my mentor, somebody who\u2019s just been absolutely extraordinary in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then there was his career in the broadcast booth.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Price was a pivotal piece of airing high school sports across the state, bringing his signature \u201cKatoosh\u201d line after a big hit to homes every Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also well known for his radio show with Michael W. Perry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLarry and I spent 33 years together and it was a great 33 years,\u201d Perry said. \u201cWe had lots of fun and as I\u2019ve mentioned many times before, I was the younger, more argumentative brother that he never wanted, but he was the older brother I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1961\">First Alert Forecast: Increasing showers, humidity for first half of the week<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Perry recounted their almost abrupt start as on-air partners to becoming a staple on the local morning commute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll never forget all of the things he taught me,\u201d Perry added. \u201cI learned so much from him and hope to carry that on for a while longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coach\u2019s legacy can still be seen to this day with the current UH football team coming to support the Price ohana and help with Sunday\u2019s ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very important for coach Timmy (Chang) and myself, you know, for us to be here and show our respect to coach, you know,\u201d said UH associate head coach Chris Brown. \u201cWe brought some of the boys and we told the boys, \u2018hey, if not for coach and these and the guys that he coached, man, we might not be where we\u2019re at today,\u2019 you know, so we have to go and show our respect to coach.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Another lasting endeavor of Coach Price was establishing the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>Just one part of a full life well lived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe can\u2019t be ignored and this is just a little handful of the people that he touched,\u201d Perry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was great, he\u2019s a great human being and he was great for Hawaii,\u201d Blangiardi added.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1959\">Suspect sought in Kailua drive-by shooting<\/a><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3>Previous coverage<\/h3>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was a Sunday afternoon dedicated to the life of Dr. Larry Price.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1964,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1965","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
