HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kamehameha Highway will be closed in both directions at Waimea Bay Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for rockfall prevention work, weather permitting.<\/p>\n

The Waimea Bay beach parking lot will also be closed during work hours. Emergency vehicles and city buses will be allowed access. Waimea Valley will not be impacted.<\/p>\n

The Hawaii Department of Transportation said the closure is necessary for the second and final helicopter delivery of rockfall protection netting. Crews will then begin securing the netting to pre-drilled anchors in the slope.<\/p>\n

Boulders fell from the slope and onto the roadway during April\u2019s Kona low storm.<\/p>\n

Slope stabilization work and restoration of the second lane is on track for completion by the end of July.<\/p>\n
