{"id":1872,"date":"2026-06-26T10:37:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T10:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1872"},"modified":"2026-06-26T10:37:05","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T10:37:05","slug":"full-oha-board-approves-172k-for-kitv-kiku-due-diligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1872","title":{"rendered":"Full OHA board approves $172K for KITV, KIKU due diligence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) \u2014 After rejecting the proposal last month, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs full board of trustees approved in a 5-4 vote Thursday $172,500 for due diligence on the potential acquisition of KITV and KIKU from Allen Media Group.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1871\">Nordstrom Rack in Waikiki to close after 10 years<\/a><\/p>\n<p>OHA chair Kaiali\u02bbi Kahele said studying the stations\u2019 assets, licenses and infrastructure could take about 90 days.<\/p>\n<h2>What trustees say the purchase could do<\/h2>\n<p>In a news release, trustees said a media acquisition could result in:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The board emphasized that the decision \u201cdoes not represent the conclusion of a process, but rather the continuation of a thoughtful and deliberate evaluation of whether this opportunity can responsibly strengthen OHA\u2019s trust assets while expanding Native Hawaiian presence, influence, and ownership in media and communications.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Board pledges transparency throughout process<\/h2>\n<p>OHA did not provide information regarding next steps on the due diligence process and stakeholder engagement opportunities. But the board said any proposal involving significant trust assets must be subjected to rigorous financial, operational, legal, and governance review and reaffirmed a commitment to transparency, accountability, and data-informed decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOHA\u2019s responsibility is not simply to manage present-day challenges, but to help create future opportunities,\u201d said OHA Investment and Land Management Committee Chair Keoni Souza. \u201cThoughtful exploration of transformative opportunities is entirely consistent with our kuleana as fiduciaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis moment reflects a larger question about who we aspire to become as a l\u0101hui,\u201d Kahele said. \u201cThe willingness to thoughtfully evaluate bold opportunities is not recklessness \u2014 it is leadership grounded in vision, responsibility, and intergenerational stewardship.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>5-4 vote draws support, concerns<\/h2>\n<p>A modified version of the proposal advanced to the full board following approval by OHA\u2019s Investment and Land Management Committee in a 5-4 vote Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>All trustees who voted Thursday also sit on the committee, and no trustee changed their vote from Wednesday\u2019s committee decision.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s discussion generated both support and concerns about a potential purchase.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe would get it at a really good cost and we would be negligent if we didn\u2019t enter into due diligence,\u201d said OHA trustee Brickwood Galuteria.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1869\">Volunteers say more protections are needed for Rocky and her monk seal pup at Kalaeloa beach<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would mean narrative sovereignty on a scale we have never held before. It would allow Hawaiian stories, language, and perspectives to appear in mainstream news every day,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could probably flip it in five or six years and make a pretty good profit,\u201d said OHA trustee John Waihe\u02bbe IV.<\/p>\n<p>Allen Media Group acquired KITV in 2020 for $30 million and later bought KIKU for $2 million.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Trustees who opposed the measure had multiple concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of my top concerns is how this could put OHA as a whole, as an entity, at risk,\u201d said OHA trustee Kalei Akaka.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many areas in which OHA needs to learn to walk well before we begin to run. First, in terms of competence, we have no competency in the industry of broadcast,\u201d said OHA trustee Keli\u02bbi Akina.<\/p>\n<p>Akina also lamented about years and money spent on development plans in Kaka\u02bbako Makai and high-profile litigation.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe are in the midst of a publicly known lawsuit with our CEO.
