HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – With summer party season in full swing, the state\u2019s Office of Consumer Protection is warning the public that scammers are using fake online party invitations to steal your passwords.<\/p>\n

\u201dScammers are sending fake e-vites that look like they\u2019re from legitimate invitation services or even from someone you know,\u201c said OCP executive director Mana Moriarty. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you click the link, it asks you to enter your email address and password to view the invite. But instead of opening an invitation, you\u2019re actually handing over your email login credentials to scammers. Once they have that, they can access your email, steal personal information, or even use your account to target others.\u201d<\/p>\n

One major red flag is being asked to log in with your email and password, or fill out personal information just to view an invitation. Legitimate e-vites don\u2019t require a password to open.<\/p>\n

Second, look closely at the sender. Even if it appears to come from a friend, their account may have been compromised. Verify through other sources.<\/p>\n

Watch for suspicious links or URLs that don\u2019t match the official website of the invitation service. If you hover over a button or take a closer look, it may not match the official website.<\/p>\n

Urgency or confusion tactics, such as messages like \u201cYou\u2019ve been invited, click now to RSVP,\u201d are designed to get you to act quickly without thinking.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake a moment, double check, and don\u2019t rush, because that\u2019s exactly what scammers are counting on,\u201c Moriarty said.<\/p>\n

Tips to protect yourself<\/h2>\n

\u201cIf you think you\u2019ve fallen for it, act quickly,\u201d Moriarty said.<\/p>\n

Change your password immediately and update it anywhere else you\u2019ve used the same password. Enable two-factor authentication if you haven\u2019t already.<\/p>\n

Report the scam and forward phishing emails to the international Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@apwg.org.<\/p>\n

Alert your bank and monitor your accounts for suspicious activity.<\/p>\n
