HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Hawaii actor who starred in an Oscar-nominated film is now leading a new thriller that may give viewers flashbacks to the classic movie \u201cJaws.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaimuki native Lachlan Ta\u02bbimua Hannemann, 25, stars in \u201cThe Bay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a bloody mess and a lot of tension. It\u2019s really intense,\u201d said Hannemann, who goes by Ta\u02bbimua.<\/p>\n

Hannemann plays Ruhan, a deckhand on a tour boat taking visitors to a remote shark sanctuary \u2014 until things go wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cOriginally the role of Ruhan was supposed to be a 60-year-old Thailand guy and I\u2019m like, first of all, I\u2019m not 60, and I don\u2019t really know a Thailand accent, but I am from Hawaii and we have something called a pidgin accent. So I pitched him (the producer) that,\u201d explained Hannemann.<\/p>\n

A sneak peek at one eerie scene includes Hannemann\u2019s character saying, \u201cI wen pull \u2018em out. Shark almost wen kill me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hannemann says while the shark is a main character in the film, there\u2019s also underlying tension among the small cast.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause there\u2019s only four of us on the boat and there are a lot of power dynamics that shift, we do fight including punching stunts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The movie is set in Thailand, but Hawaii viewers may recognize Chinaman\u2019s Hat in the background.<\/p>\n

Hannemann says nearly all of the film was shot in one month on Oahu at Kualoa Ranch\u2019s Secret Island, Kaneohe Bay and Pier 38 in December 2024.<\/p>\n

While the sandbar is home to many hammerhead sharks, it was movie magic that brought the sharks on screen to life.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a silicone cast of a fin and tail. He would be in the bay of Secret Island and he\u2019s manuvering these things like swimming with them and moving it,\u201d explained Hannemann.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Bay\u201d is Hannemann\u2019s first feature-length film. The Saint Louis graduate previously starred in \u201cJane Austen\u2019s Period Drama,\u201d a satirical short film that earned an Oscar nomination in January.<\/p>\n

He says the film underscores why Hawaii is one of the best places in the world to shoot movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have some really talented crew, man, that are just hungry and looking to film and create and share their stories,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bay\u201d opens in select theaters and on video streaming platforms on July 17.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, this week Hannemann returns to Kualoa Ranch to film another indie movie called \u201cThe Tourist Curse.\u201d Next year, he\u2019ll appear in season two of \u201cUntamed\u201d on Netflix, which was also filmed on Oahu.<\/p>\n
