{"id":1726,"date":"2026-06-23T09:04:49","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T09:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1726"},"modified":"2026-06-23T09:04:49","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T09:04:49","slug":"olivet-baptist-church-celebrates-100-years-in-honolulu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1726","title":{"rendered":"Olivet Baptist Church celebrates 100 years in Honolulu"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; One of Honolulu\u2019s oldest Southern Baptist churches celebrates its 100th birthday in July.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1724\">New reports of stinging caterpillars prompt state to take action<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It all began in the heart of Honolulu in 1926 when a group of missionaries started meeting with a few local residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen that little group first formed on July 4th of 1926, they gathered together under the name of Mission Church,\u201d said senior pastor Jamie McElrath.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the congregation grew, drawing the community in, and the name of the church was later changed to Olivet Baptist. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, longtime church member Pearl Arashiro recalls why she became a member of this congregation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen WWII started, the missionaries from Japan came here. They could also speak Japanese, so they impressed our parents being that they were Caucasian and they are all speaking Japanese. We all started coming to church,\u201d Arashiro recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came to Olivet as a child. My first recollection of Olivet was when I was about 5 years old, and my Auntie Carol and my Uncle Masaharu got married here. I have a long history with Olivet,\u201d said longtime member Faith McFatridge.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1722\">First Alert Forecast: More passing showers and gusty trades build<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dean Morihara says he has been coming to the Beretania Street church since the days of \u201cLeave it to Beaver,\u201d a popular TV show from the \u201950s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose days, there weren\u2019t as many churches, you know, and so all of it was like a central church, and people kind of gravitated here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>McElrath said, \u201cIn each era or season of the history of Honolulu, and the history of the Hawaiian islands, the church has played a role in that history and we\u2019ve seen God bless and faithfully empowered the church to be a light for the gospel and a presence in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Church member Teren Young said, \u201cI\u2019m excited about the 100 years. It\u2019s crazy, kind of exciting to see what the future will bring.
