HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – In youth sports across Hawaii, parents are usually the ones coaching their kids, especially fathers. Often, these lessons go far beyond the sport.<\/p>\n

For many young athletes, their coach is also their biggest fan.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad has been my coach all my life since I was really young,\u201d said basketball player Keoni Vivas.<\/p>\n

Keoni\u2019s father, coach Matt Vivas, knows juggling both roles isn\u2019t easy.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cHe understands that he\u2019s going to be pushed, his standards are higher [than] the other players on the court just because I\u2019m his father,\u201d Matt Vivas said.<\/p>\n

Across Hawaii gyms, these coaching dads aren\u2019t just drawing up plays.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely hard for him because he has to take time out of his busy schedule to come to practice,\u201d said Tobias Ng-Osorio.<\/p>\n

Tobias\u2019 father, Kanealii Ng-Osorio, called the experience \u201cchallenging but very rewarding\u201d because it allows them to share those moments together.<\/p>\n

Others said coaching demands long days. Lucas Guzman\u2019s father, coach Charles Guzman, said his day starts at 4 a.m. \u201cIt\u2019s long days and long nights, and weekends are full of basketball, but I love it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Another challenge for these fathers is knowing when to be a coach and when to just be a dad.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat dad-player-son relationship, it always gets a little bit hard because you\u2019re trying to teach life lessons but you\u2019re also trying to teach them basketball, and it completely blends, crosses lines and just makes it really, really hard,\u201d said coach Dean Shimamoto.<\/p>\n

There are highs and sometimes lows, and the relationship is often a balancing act.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cWe get yelled at a lot,\u201d said Daxton and Kash Nagamine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love my children till the end, so I just decided to just be hard on them like everybody else,\u201d said coach Dean Nagamine.<\/p>\n

Coach Daniel Tautofi said he looks at coaching basketball to help raise the young women on his team, including his daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for my dad, I wouldn\u2019t have come this far,\u201d Divine Tautofi said.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cHaving my dad as a basketball coach taught me to put effort into everything I do,\u201d Koa Shimamoto added. \u201cThank you for always being there for me through the hard times and the happy times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keoni Vivas said he looks up to his dad.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s done so much for me,\u201d Keoni Vivas said. \u201cI love you dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanna say I love you and thank you for always being there for me,\u201d Tobias Ng-Osorio said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for pushing me this far, and I love you,\u201d Lucas Guzman said. \u201cHappy Father\u2019s Day!\u201d<\/p>\n

After the practices, games and tournaments, it\u2019s the memories of their time together that they hope will last.<\/p>\n
