HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) – A lease agreement keeping Punaluu Black Sand Beach Park open to the public has been extended.<\/p>\n

County officials and Black Sand Beach LLC said they have agreed to extend the park\u2019s lease through Sept. 1, 2026, allowing discussions about the future of the popular Kau park to continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cPunaluu Black Sand Beach Park has a long, rich history of supporting the Kau community, having hosted generations of birthdays, graduation parties, family reunions, celebrations of life, and annual events,\u201d Mayor Kimo Alameda said.<\/p>\n

County officials said the park has operated under a lease agreement with private landowners since at least 1954, providing shoreline access and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.<\/p>\n

The current lease, executed in 1998, covers about 6.8 acres and includes parking areas, pavilions, bathrooms and campgrounds.<\/p>\n

Officials said the two-month extension will give both parties additional time to work toward a mutually beneficial agreement.<\/p>\n

Black Sand Beach LLC said it remains committed to preserving and enhancing the park as an important cultural, recreational and community asset while discussions continue.<\/p>\n
