HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) \u2014 The Hawai\u02bbi Department of Land and Natural Resources is ramping up preparations for peak wildfire and hurricane season.<\/p>\n

DLNR said it is boosting statewide readiness with new equipment, firefighting support, vegetation management and increased coordination with partner agencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWildfire remains one of the most significant threats to Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s communities, watersheds, native ecosystems and critical infrastructure,\u201d said Michael Walker, DLNR state protection forester.<\/p>\n

DLNR urged residents and visitors to use caution with activities that could spark a wildfire, especially during dry and windy conditions.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

The agency said most wildfires in Hawai\u02bbi are human-caused and often can be prevented through responsible behavior.<\/p>\n

DLNR has added 15 new wildland fire engines statewide to strengthen DOFAW\u2019s fleet, increasing capacity to deliver personnel, equipment and water while improving safety and effectiveness, officials said.<\/p>\n

DOFAW is also improving and expanding helicopter water-dipping sites for aerial firefighting, including identifying and enhancing locations that aircraft can use during wildfire suppression, especially in remote areas.<\/p>\n

State parks and small boat harbors are also helping to reduce wildfire risk and improve firefighter access through routine removal of dry vegetation, invasive plants and other accumulated fuels.<\/p>\n

Preparing at home<\/h2>\n

Residents are encouraged to take proactive steps to protect their homes and communities, including:<\/p>\n

This year, DOFAW will work with the Hawaii National Guard as needed to support wildfire suppression operations.<\/p>\n
