{"id":1547,"date":"2026-06-18T21:08:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T21:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1547"},"modified":"2026-06-18T21:08:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T21:08:11","slug":"bee-rescuers-answer-the-call-across-oahu-while-asking-residents-not-to-spray","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1547","title":{"rendered":"Bee rescuers answer the call across Oahu while asking residents not to spray"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; With Father\u2019s Day coming up this weekend, we went holoholo with a father and son who are all about saving our natural pollinators.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1545\">Man indicted on multiple charges after fatal Kailua-Kona crash<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Peter Morrow and his son, Jason, are the owners of Honey Bee Rescue.<\/p>\n<p>The father-son duo recently rescued bees from an irrigation valve in Ewa Beach and from the middle of a road in Papak\u014dlea, where the queen was run over.<\/p>\n<p>When they found the queen, they placed her in a cage to act as an attractant.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe were able to put her into a cage\u2026to lure all the rest of the bees off of the middle of the road and get them into the vacuum bucket the no-kill bee vac,\u201d said Jason.<\/p>\n<p>During peak season, Peter says the workload is nonstop.\u201cWe handle 6 to 8 calls a day\u2026 and we do cutouts, we do 60-foot lifts underneath overpasses to get the bees out,\u201d said Peter.<\/p>\n<p>Some days stretch late into the night. After removals, they leave boxes behind so returning bees can find the colony \u2014 then come back later to pick everything up.\u201cHe doesn\u2019t come home till 12, 1 a.m. sometimes,\u201d said Peter.<\/p>\n<p>Peter says a family trip to Oregon about seven years ago sparked his interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started looking at some videos that night, literally ordered an empty bee box to be shipped back to Hawaii that night,\u201d said Peter Morrow. \u201cNo experience, nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He connected with local mentors, Ken and Penny Harmeyer and learned by doing. Peter remembers his first removal vividly \u2014 a large compost bin packed with a hive.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1544\">Free spay and neuter surgeries offered in Lahaina<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was such an adrenaline rush\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter still has that first hive.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSeven years later, I still have that hive till today, a couple 100 pounds of honey out of that one hive every year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason, a professional dancer who worked alongside his wife, Madisyn, said the pandemic forced a pivot when entertainment jobs disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy only source of income at that time, because that was kind of the whole plan, was like, do dance and do that\u2026entertainment industry closed down completely,\u201d Jason said. \u201cAnd so, he\u2019s like, want to make some extra money doing the bees? I\u2019m like, sure, I need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd since then, it\u2019s been good fun. I\u2019ve been self-employed now and now my wife is full-time with us and it\u2019s great. I get to spend every day with my best friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Their message to residents: don\u2019t panic \u2014 and don\u2019t spray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf bees show up at your house, don\u2019t hesitate to call us,\u201d said Peter. \u201cWe will come out, do an assessment, figure out what we got to do to save the bees. Do not spray them with chemicals or water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust let them settle in and let us come out and do our job so that nobody gets hurt and we can save our natural pollinators that we need for these islands.
