MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) – Survivors of the 2023 Maui fires began receiving notices Wednesday detailing how much money they could receive from a $4 billion global settlement.<\/p>\n

Sanford Hill, 75, is among nearly 22,000 people still waiting for their share of the settlement. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been rough,\u201d said Hill.<\/p>\n

Hill was living at Hale Mahaolu Eono, senior housing that was destroyed in the fire.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

He now reluctantly lives on Kauai desperate for settlement money so he can afford to move back home to Maui.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re saying we\u2019re not going to be made whole. What they\u2019re not saying is how much we\u2019re not going to be made whole,\u201d Hill said. <\/p>\n

What the notices mean<\/h2>\n

Maui attorney Jan Apo, a Lahaina native, said the notices do not represent actual payments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I want to make clear for everybody, from my clients as well as everybody out there, the notice of determination is not an actual payment,\u201d Apo said. \u201cIt is an offer to settle your claim, and then you need to respond and accept it or reject it.\u201d <\/p>\n

Apo, born and raised in Lahaina, has been practicing law for more than three decades and lost two family homes in the fire.<\/p>\n

He sent an email to his clients last week warning them that other lawyers may be fighting Judge Peter Cahill\u2019s unprecedented ruling to reduce attorney\u2019s fees so survivors get more money.<\/p>\n

Apo said he agrees with Cahill\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want the Lahaina fire victims to get their compensation as soon as possible,\u201d Apo said. \u201cThis is a limited fund, a compromised settlement. No one\u2019s going to get paid their whole damages, but everybody\u2019s going to get something to help them through.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Timeline for payments<\/h2>\n

Claimants have 30 days to accept the amount or contest it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe settlement administrators need to get a number of the claims back in their hands so they can do the math to determine the percentage,\u201d Apo said.<\/p>\n

That process could take months. <\/p>\n

Apo said no attorney has challenged Cahill\u2019s order so far.<\/p>\n

Hill said he hopes it stays that way.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ones that don\u2019t, they should be well known as far as who they are,\u201d Hill said.<\/p>\n
