HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A quieter weather pattern is settling in across the islands, with slightly weaker trade winds today and just a few passing windward and mauka showers. Most communities can expect a mix of sunshine and clouds, while leeward areas stay mostly dry. Surf remains a big story, with elevated south shore waves continuing today as a long-period south-southwest swell slowly fades.<\/p>\n

By Wednesday and Thursday, winds will become much lighter and feeling the heat, allowing sea breezes to develop during the day and land breezes at night. That means afternoon clouds and a few showers will be more likely over interior and mountain areas rather than the usual windward locations. If you\u2019re planning outdoor activities, mornings will generally offer the best weather before clouds build inland later in the day.<\/p>\n

A pocket of deeper tropical moisture moving up from the southeast is expected to increase shower chances across the Big Island beginning Wednesday, then spread into Maui County and possibly portions of Oahu through Thursday and Friday. Some areas could see more pop-up afternoon and evening showers as the moisture moves through.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead to the weekend, a return to a more typical trade wind pattern is expected, bringing showers back toward windward and mauka neighborhoods while leeward areas trend drier once again.<\/p>\n

For beachgoers, south shore surf remains elevated under a High Surf Advisory through early Wednesday. The current swell is gradually declining, but another south-southwest swell arriving Wednesday night into Thursday could push surf back near advisory levels. North shore surf remains tiny, while east shore surf will stay below average as trade winds weaken. <\/p>\n

Boaters should also be aware of harbor surges and strong currents near south- and west-facing harbor entrances.<\/p>\n

Minor coastal flooding remains possible around the late afternoon and early evening high tides through at least today due to King Tides combined with elevated ocean water levels. Low-lying coastal roads, docks, boat ramps, and shoreline areas along south and west-facing shores will be most vulnerable during peak tide times.<\/p>\n
