KIHEI (HawaiiNewsNow) – Six people were injured Sunday when a second-story balcony collapsed at the Shores of Maui Condominiums on South Kihei Road.<\/p>\n

Four people fell to the ground when the balcony detached from the building. Firefighters rescued two others who were trapped on the balcony.<\/p>\n

The balcony is now resting on a rock wall below the building. A building inspector and property manager were on site, and people are still staying in some units.<\/p>\n

Dawn Griffiths and her family were staying at the condos when the collapse happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just started to hear a loud rumble, and I think it was my grandson that said, \u2018What\u2019s that?\u2019 And then we started hearing just crashing and then we heard lots of sirens,\u201d Dawn said.<\/p>\n

The noise they heard was right around the corner.<\/p>\n

Dawn\u2019s husband, David, said emergency responders were treating injured people when he arrived at the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EMT guys were still on their way to deal with some of the injured people, and there\u2019s somebody down here which surprised me. I don\u2019t know if some debris hit them or if they fell off the top of the balcony,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Injuries and response<\/h1>\n

Officials said four men and two women, ranging in age from 30s to 50s, suffered head, neck, back, arm and leg injuries. <\/p>\n

Five were taken to a hospital.<\/p>\n

The Griffiths say it was traumatizing to watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe saw them load up three people and it was just pretty scary for the whole neighborhood seeing as they would they kept us in our distance then. But it was scary,\u201d Dawn said.<\/p>\n

Firefighters stabilized the balcony. <\/p>\n

Officials have not said what caused it to collapse.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t use our lanais, anybody in the place, so it makes it a little bit difficult,\u201d Dawn said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe association put a restriction until they do some investigation on the rest of the structure,\u201d David said.<\/p>\n

County officials placed a red tag placard on the building on Tuesday, designating it an unsafe structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cA code case review has been initiated for the unsafe balcony,\u201d a county official said in a statement. \u201cThe DSA Building Inspector also viewed the exteriors of other balconies at the location and spoke with a property representative regarding temporary safety measures. At this time, further research is being done regarding the structures at the property.<\/p>\n

County officials said Department of Public Works, Development Services Administration (DSA) has a process in place to perform unsafe structure inspections at the request of property owners. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe County encourages any property owner to utilize these services if they have any concerns,\u201d the county official said.<\/p>\n

The property manager declined an interview and referred questions to the condo\u2019s attorney. Hawaii News Now is still waiting to hear back.<\/p>\n
