HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Oahu residents are being encouraged to conserve water and take advantage of assistance programs as sewer rate changes take effect next month.<\/p>\n

The City and County of Honolulu\u2019s Department of Environmental Services said a new sewer fee structure will begin July 1. Under the change, the monthly base rate will decrease from $63.55 to $48.77, while the volumetric rate based on water usage will increase from $7.95 to $11.83 per 1,000 gallons.<\/p>\n

City officials said the new structure is designed to reward conservation by allowing customers who use less water to pay lower sewer bills.<\/p>\n

According to the department, a household using 6,000 gallons of water per month can expect a sewer bill of about $107. Reducing usage by 2,000 gallons per month could lower that bill to about $83.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know every dollar matters for local families,\u201d said ENV Director Roger Babcock. \u201cThat\u2019s why we want to remind residents that conservation counts and provide them with additional support to help offset the changes in sewer fees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials highlighted several programs available to help residents reduce costs, including the Customer Assistance for Residential Environmental Services, or CARES, program. Eligible customers may receive up to a $240 annual credit on their sewer bill. Applications are being accepted through Oct. 31 on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/p>\n

The department also partnered with the Board of Water Supply to offer double rebates on water-efficient fixtures such as toilets and washing machines.<\/p>\n

\u201cWater efficiency is good for everyone because it puts money back in people\u2019s pockets and conserves our most precious resource,\u201d said Board of Water Supply Chief Engineer Ernie Lau.<\/p>\n

Mayor Rick Blangiardi said the city is focused on helping residents navigate the cost of living while maintaining critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The new sewer rates take effect July 1.<\/p>\n

Information about assistance programs, rebates and conservation resources is available through the Department of Environmental Services.<\/p>\n
