HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Navy will move forward with the construction of a new water treatment facility at its Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility and reconnect the Red Hill Shaft to the drinking water system at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Details are outlined in a Final Environmental Assessment (EA) recently released by Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Pacific.<\/p>\n

The Red Hill and Aiea-Halawa shafts were closed after a jet fuel leak from the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Facility sickened thousands of residents in 2021. <\/p>\n

Under the plan, the Navy will construct a permanent Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) water treatment system with supporting infrastructure and utilities. A \u201cFinding of No Signifciant Impact\u201d statement posted on the NAVFAC website says this will also allow the Navy to discontinue the current practice of treating and discharging water into the Halawa Stream. <\/p>\n

The Navy says installation for an interim GAS is already underway so that it can be used while the permanent system is built. The Navy expects the interim system to be operating by the end of next year. <\/p>\n
