HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A large crowd gathered in downtown Honolulu on Friday to honor King Kamehameha I, the monarch who unified the Hawaiian Islands.<\/p>\n

The annual lei draping ceremony at Ali\u2018i\u014dlani Hale included cultural protocols and pageantry, and performances by the Royal Hawaiian Band and H\u0101lau M\u014dhala \u2018Ilima.<\/p>\n

Friday\u2019s ceremony came a day after the official King Kamehameha Day state holiday and is part of the 154th annual celebration, which is observed with festivities statewide.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme is \u201cE k\u016b, e ho\u02bbololi,\u201d which organizers translated as \u201cStand upright and change [unpleasant] conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Floral parade route and road closures<\/h1>\n

The 109th King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 13, starting on King Street fronting \u2018Iolani Palace.<\/p>\n

The parade route continues down Punchbowl Street, then turns onto Ala Moana Boulevard and Kal\u0101kaua Avenue, finishing at Monsarrat Avenue and Queen Kapi\u2018olani Park.<\/p>\n

Streets will begin closing in downtown Honolulu at 7:30 a.m., with closures moving along the route ahead of the parade. The parade is expected to reach Kapi\u2018olani Park at around 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

Congestion is expected and motorists should use alternate routes, allow extra driving time and avoid double-parking.<\/p>\n

Ho\u2018olaule\u2018a at Kapi\u2018olani Park<\/h1>\n

A King Kamehameha Celebration ho\u2018olaule\u2018a is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Kapi\u2018olani Park, where the parade ends on Kal\u0101kaua Avenue.<\/p>\n

Admission is free and the event will include food booths, family-friendly activities and Hawaiian cultural programming, including hula and live entertainment.<\/p>\n

Attendees can take part in traditional Hawaiian games such as k\u014dnane, and learn through workshops and demonstrations, including p\u016bp\u016b Ni\u02bbihau lei making, \u02bbohe k\u0101pala, and lauhala weaving. <\/p>\n

Organizers said the ho\u2018olaule\u2018a is a place for parade-goers to gather and for attendees to meet and greet with p\u0101\u02bb\u016b riders and other parade participants.<\/p>\n
