Chairs once filled with shoppers now sit vacant while remaining businesses pack up and prepare to leave.<\/p>\n<p>For many tenants, the closure is bittersweet.<\/p>\n<p>Kamitoku Ramen, which has operated at Ward Centre for the past five years, is preparing to shut its doors on June 21.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re closing soon this month, around the 21st. The 21st is our last day here,\u201d said Kee Situ, manager of Kamitoku Ramen. \u201cI feel a little bit sad because many people, they love our ramen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Situ said many employees are also struggling with the transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of our coworkers also feel bad,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Other businesses have called Ward Centre home for much longer.<\/p>\n<p>Noa Noa has been part of the shopping center since 1983 and is now selling off inventory during its final days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel really sad, really sad,\u201d said Maryann Barnett, general manager of Noa Noa. \u201cBut the world moves on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barnett said the store\u2019s lease was originally expected to run through the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur lease would have ended at the end of this year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Still, she said the business is trying to stay flexible during the transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll just go with the flow,\u201d Barnett said. \u201cIt\u2019s not something I always agree with, but it is what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1286\">Maui Council approves $1.7M in AI surveillance tools for police<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frequent visitors say losing Ward Centre feels personal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of mixed emotions, kind of heartbroken, obviously, have a lot of fond memories here,\u201d said Marvin Fisher, a frequent Ward Centre shopper.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Fisher said stops at Try Coffee and BoxJelly had become part of his daily routine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be hard to replicate that and replace that,\u201d he said. \u201cDefinitely a bit heartbroken for the small businesses that are kind of closing up shop abruptly as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Doug Johnstone, president of the Hawaii region and national condominium development at Howard Hughes Communities, said the company recognizes Ward Centre\u2019s significance to the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have fond aloha for Ward Centre and its important role in the history of our neighborhood,\u201d Johnstone said. \u201cAs plans move forward for redevelopment on the site, we look forward to announcing details about the next phase.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Redevelopment plans call for two condominium towers with about 369 housing units, 20,000 square feet of retail space and a new one-acre public park.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=1284\">New list spotlights Hawaii\u2019s friendliest small towns<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A specific timeline for demolition and redevelopment has not yet been finalized.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ward Centre is set to close by the end of the month after more than four decades.
