HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – FEMA has approved new federal funding to support disaster recovery and reduce future flood risk in Hawaii.<\/p>\n

The agency announced Wednesday that more than $2.2 million was approved for projects in Hawaii and Arizona through its Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant programs.<\/p>\n

Of that total, nearly $200,000 was awarded to Hawaii to help cover costs associated with the March Kona Low storms.FEMA also approved nearly $1.2 million for the development of a flood forecasting system in Hawaii.<\/p>\n

The system will monitor streamflow and water levels using historical rainfall, streamflow and gauge height data to improve flood prediction accuracy.<\/p>\n

FEMA said the grants are distributed through state and local governments, which determine how the funding is used to support their communities.<\/p>\n
