{"id":117,"date":"2026-05-15T11:07:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T11:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=117"},"modified":"2026-05-15T11:07:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T11:07:24","slug":"molokai-residents-wait-for-repairs-nearly-two-months-after-second-kona-low","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=117","title":{"rendered":"Molokai residents wait for repairs nearly two months after second Kona Low"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; When the second Kona Low storm struck Hawaii in March, Molokai resident Sumu Asano remembered seeing rushing runoff about three feet high blanket his neighborhood, Kapaakea Hawaiian Homestead in Kaunakakai.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=115\">ALOHA for HAWAII: Hawaii News Now raises nearly $495K and counting for Kona low storm recovery<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWater went straight underneath the house, climbed up straight over to the edge, and broke my wall in front that protects us from the tide and the waves,\u201d Asano said. \u201cIt went straight over, right through everything, completely underwater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the water filled the underneath of the house with mud and debris, the structure itself was not harmed.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking quickly, Asano moved his truck, \u201cbecause the land started to collapse.\u201d He was surprised the flood\u2019s force did not cause more damage.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Asano lives next to one of the two ditches that drain rainwater from the homestead. Both trenches overflowed during the storm, causing the walls bordering them to crumble.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly two months after the second Kona low, Asano has been working with the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to rebuild the ditch wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of sad, I mean, a lot of people in our neighborhood, our homestead, we want to get back to regular normalcy, having to go in and out of our houses, seeing our yards cleaned and set,\u201d Asano said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=113\">Hawaii doctor: Hantavirus \u2018is not the next pandemic\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kalani Fronda, the department\u2019s acting administrator of its land development division, said, \u201cOur hope is that we can start to work locally with our district office as well as with some of our contractors to be able to address that and really expedite the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fronda added that the department will work to stabilize the affected areas over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Asano pointed to two mounds of dirt sitting in his yard that he said DHHL gathered and left there a few weeks ago for the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of it (the work) may trigger certain types of state and federal regulatory issues, so we have to be kind of very careful of how we do that,\u201d Fronda said. \u201cThese discussions are active, and we gotta continue to really work together and build that Pilina because it really takes a village.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking long-term, the department plans to widen the culvert mauka of Kamehameha V Highway that feeds into the ditches to mitigate future flood damage.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe reason for it is the size of it is inadequate, and so we\u2019re actually building it three times the size,\u201d Fronda said.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=111\">Maui man dies after crashing into school bus<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fronda expects the expansion could take about two to four years.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly two months after the Kona Low storms, residents at the Kapaakea Hawaiian Homes are still waiting for damaged ditches to be repaired.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":116,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-117","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
