HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) \u2014 The Office of Hawaiian Affairs will once again consider the possibility of owning KITV and KIKU.<\/p>\n

The proposal is back on the board agenda after a majority of trustees rejected it last month in a 5\u20134 vote. Now it\u2019s back on the agenda with slightly different wording.<\/p>\n

Two decades ago, OHA rejected a proposal to buy KGMB. OHA\u2019s latest agenda item would authorize spending up to $172,500 for due diligence activities associated with OHA\u2019s potential acquisition of KITV, Inc. and KIKU, LLC from Allen Media Group.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s unorthodox for a Hawaiian organization, especially OHA, to move into an area like media,\u201d said K\u016bhi\u014d Lewis, Hawaiian Council CEO.<\/p>\n

Lewis said he\u2019s intrigued.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it got voted down, I was kind of disappointed, but now we\u2019re seeing it revived,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cI\u2019m excited again. I think, for me, it\u2019s about the idea of Hawaiians having a stake in mainstream media\u2014 more toward education and revitalization \u2014 which is extremely powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trustees who voted no said OHA had other priorities, like development at Kaka\u02bbako and \u02bbIwilei. OHA Chair Kaiali\u02bbi Kahele said he\u2019s had discussions with KITV\u2019s owner, Allen Media Group, and would look for partners down the road.<\/p>\n

OHA Vice Chair Keoni Souza is chairperson of the Investment and Land Management Committee, which will take up the agenda item. He said the issue needed to be kept alive and deserved more discussion.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter much deliberation, I felt that there was an appetite to take it to the next level. There are some really great questions that the trustees had asked, and at that time we couldn\u2019t provide them with the answers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Could OHA afford the millions needed to purchase a TV station? Souza said that\u2019s something the agency would figure out through the process.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s another signal that Native Hawaiians are moving into areas where they have a seat at the table, and hospitality consultant Keith Vieira said media can reach a broad audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s certainly worth it for them to look at. This is a viable way to get out their message over time,\u201d Vieira said. \u201cSomething like this is significant \u2014 a significant financial investment \u2014 and it has huge potential benefits down the road, as well as risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

OHA\u2019s Investment and Land Management Committee will take up the issue on June 24 at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n
