The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announced Thursday that partial access to the shoreline at Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe will reopen Saturday.

Visitors to the park will be able to stroll along the shoreline on the improved pathway from the Paul R. Weissich Education Center and access from the Kahua Kuou overlook, the city said.

The city said the lake’s shoreline was damaged during the March Kona low storms, and garden staff have been working to restore the shoreline.

Several sections of the lake are still unfit for public use, and the city intends to have a majority of the shoreline restored by June 2026, weather permitting.

With work still underway, DPR said the family fishing program at the lake will resume on Wednesday, July 1. Online reservations will reopen on June 17 at 5 p.m.

The city said it’s the first time the education center’s pathway has been reinforced and will provide garden visitors with more stable, consistent grounding. The previous path would often get muddy during regular rainy conditions along the Windward Coast. Peterson Bros. completed the about $170,000 contract for the reinforced path.
