Gas leak prompts evacuation of Costco Iwilei

IWILEI (HawaiiNewsNow) – A gas leak triggered a brief evacuation of Costco’s Iwilei store Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to 525 Alakawa St. just before 1:15 p.m. after gas was reported leaking inside the building near the loading dock.

The store was evacuated by the time crews arrived.

Officials said firefighters observed a white vapor cloud throughout the store and ventilated the building.

The HFD hazmat unit and a Costco air conditioning technician stopped the leak just before 2 p.m., officials said.

HFD said crews continued to ventilate the building and gathered air samples to ensure there were no elevated readings.

Customers and employees were allowed to return inside once it was deemed safe.

No one was hurt.
