Waipahu building fire causes $903k in damage, classified as accidental
WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Firefighters battled a 2-alarm building fire at Leeward Drive Inn, a landmark Korean restaurant in Waipahu early Friday morning.
Honolulu Fire Department crews were called out to the scene near Farrington Highway and Pupukahi Street just before 4:30 a.m. on Friday.
The first unit arrived at 4:35 a.m. and found smoke on all sides and flames through the roof.
Firefighters secured a water supply and initiated an aggressive offensive fire attack with an aerial ladder fire stream and handlines.
Overhaul techniques were performed on the rooftop and in the ceiling to extinguish smoldering materials while looking for hidden fires.

The fire was extinguished at 6:50 a.m., and the scene was cleared shortly after.
The restaurant will be closed Friday after the building sustained extensive interior damage.
No one was injured, and HFD said all searches confirmed no one was inside.
The HFD Fire Investigator was requested to determine the origin and cause of the fire and provide damage estimates.
Honolulu police and Emergency Medical Services were also on the scene.
On Oct. 13, an HFD fire investigator classified the fire as accidental
Officials said the fire originated in the kitchen where a gas griddle was left unattended. Heat build up from the griddle ignited accumulated grease in the exhaust vent going out through the roof.
The estimated fire loss is $903,000, including $743,000 in property damage and $160,000 in damaged contents.
