The Hawaii Police Department said an officer was trying to arrest Nafetalai Teisina, 31, in connection with a reported theft at a parking lot along Mamalahoa Highway. Police said Teisina fled into dense brush and unstable lava rock.
Footage captures confrontation
The footage shows the officer warning Teisina not to move or he would be tased. Teisina continued moving and repeatedly said, “I’m going to kill you,” while reaching for rocks. The officer drew his firearm and warned Teisina not to throw a rock.
Teisina threw a rock, picked up another and said, “Shoot. See what you guys do to me. Huh. You make me suffer.” The officer again warned him not to throw it. Teisina threw the rock, hitting the officer, who opened fire.
