HNN Kahoolawe documentary to premiere at HIFF 2026
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii International Film Festival announced its 2026 lineup Tuesday, and among the featured premieres is a Hawaii News Now documentary examining the history and ongoing restoration of Kahoʻolawe.

“Protecting Kahoʻolawe: 50 Years of Aloha ʻĀina” was produced by HNN anchor Mark Carpenter and photojournalist Corbin Gregory.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the historic first landing by the “Kahoʻolawe Nine,” whose actions drew national attention and catalyzed the movement that eventually halted U.S. military bombing on the island.
Carpenter and Gregory traveled to Kahoʻolawe to document the ongoing restoration efforts led by the Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana, honoring the generations of sacrifices made to heal the land.

The documentary premieres Sunday, Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. at Consolidated Theatres Kahala, followed by a second screening Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 1:30 p.m.
General admission tickets are $17, or $20 the day of the show, with $15 discounted admission available for military, seniors 62 and older, and students.
