Lihue Airport reopens after Hurricane Lowell passes Kauai, port remains closed

LIHUE (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has reopened the Lihue Airport Tuesday after Hurricane Lowell passed Kauai and the rest of the state Monday.

Lowell is now barely a hurricane and pulling away from the state, with many of the coastal warnings canceled, but the risk of flooding remains.

As of 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, HDOT reopened the airport.

It was closed at 2:30 p.m. Monday ahead of Lowell’s arrival, and all flights in and out of the airport were canceled for the rest of Monday, officials said.

The department said travelers should check with their airline on the status of their flight before heading to the airport.

Travelers should anticipate delays and allow extra time to check in and clear security.

Airlines issue travel advisory

Alaska Airlines said Alaska and Hawaiian Airlines passengers scheduled to travel to and from Lihue through Tuesday have the flexibility to change or cancel their flights without fees. View the travel advisory here.

Southwest Airlines issued a travel advisory for travelers flying in and out of Lihue through Tuesday.

Kaua‘i commercial ports closed

Kaua‘i commercial ports at Port Allen and Nāwiliwili remain closed under Port Condition Zulu, halting all terminal, facility, and vessel operations.
