Aloha Festivals kicks off 80th anniversary celebration in Waikiki

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawai‘i’s Aloha Festivals marks its 80th year with a royal court investiture in Waikīkī.

The historic afternoon celebration kicked off on Saturday with an opening ceremony in Coconut Grove at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

Organizers say the royal court serves as a reminder of Hawaiʻi’s royal legacy.

The following roles were honored at the ceremony:

The ceremony honored Hawaiʻi’s aliʻi (ruling chiefs) with traditional protocols, royal regalia and live hula and musical performances.

Upcoming events

Aloha Festivals is holding two more events this month in Waikīkī.

The 72nd Annual Waikīkī Ho‘olaule‘a (festival or large celebration) takes place on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 6 to 10 p.m.

The beachfront street festival will close Kalākaua Avenue to feature local cuisine, artisan crafts and multiple stages of live entertainment with top local artists and hula performances.

The 78th Annual Floral Parade, presented by ʻAlohilani Resort Waikīkī Beach, takes place on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The parade will begin at Ala Moana Park and cross Kalākaua Avenue to Kapi‘olani Park, featuring a colorful procession of traditional art of pāʻū riding, performances and floats covered with Hawaiian flowers.
