UH receiver Uiliata balances fatherhood and emerging role as ‘Bows top target

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawaiʻi football team is preparing to host the UNLV Rebels on Saturday — a matchup that could have major late-season implications.

In the team’s first availability report released Thursday morning, star wide receiver Pofele Ashlock is listed as questionable.

While Ashlock recovers from an injury, new playmakers are stepping up, including all-around athlete Tama Uiliata.

After redshirting and then serving as the team’s punt returner last season, Uiliata is ready to take on any role head coach Timmy Chang throws at him.

His journey traces back to high school, when UH was his sole offer out of Waipahu High School.

“I see myself staying here. This is my first offer. It’s just showing loyalty like staying at Waipahu. It’s kind of the same thing. People would tell me to go places, but I’m here where I want to be,” said Uiliata.

During his prep career, Uiliata was a standout for the Marauders as a triple threat at quarterback, running back and receiver.

His versatility has proven highly valuable. He accounted for 32 offensive touchdowns, leading Waipahu to the state championship game.

“Having that instinct as a quarterback so I kind of know what Micah’s going through. I know what he wants, when he wants it,” said Uiliata.

The growing connection between Uiliata and quarterback Micah Alejado was on full display Saturday night against Stanford.

The Waipahu native recorded a team-high eight catches and caught his first touchdown as a Rainbow Warrior to keep the ‘Bows alive in the fourth quarter.

“We wasn’t clicking in the first half, but second half just showing what kind of team we have, a team that never quits and just plays until the clock hits zero,” said Uiliata.

While Uiliata makes highlight-worthy plays on the field, he says his high school sweetheart, Serenity, deserves the credit for keeping their family grounded.

She takes care of their two daughters, Xaydria and Zaylani, while he balances a busy football and academic schedule.

“My second daughter, she just made one yesterday. I wasn’t able to make it back home, but it was nice singing happy birthday to her over the phone. Having that family support from my side, my girlfriend’s side, it’s really special,” said Uiliata.
