New AI tool now required for some building permit applications on Oahu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Artificial Intelligence is now being used process permit applications for residential projects on Oahu.

The Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting implemented CivCheck on Tuesday.

The AI-guided tool helps applicants identify potential issues with plans before submitting their applications online. A guide for using the process is available on the DPP website.

It is now a mandatory step for certain residential projects including new construction, additions, or alterations for single family homes and duplexes.

Commercial projects and those using solar are exempt. The City says those eligible for Quick Permits should not use CivCheck.

All permit applications and eligible projects that don’t complete the full process will be rejected.
