Oahu nonprofit Papahana Kuaola celebrates 20 years of aina-based learning

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The public is invited to a free community event marking two decades of environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and community education on Oahu’s windward side.

Native Hawaiian educational nonprofit Papahana Kuaola is hosting a Hoolaulea 20th anniversary event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, Aug. 30, at its 63-acre site at Waipao in Heeia.

Attendees can enjoy live entertainment, food, local craft vendors, educational booths from community organizations, and various hands-on cultural activities.

Papahana Kuaola executive director Tesia Roberts and community engagement and education manager Keoua Nelsen joined HNN’s Sunrise to discuss the nonprofit’s milestone.

20 years of restoring Waipao

Papahana Kuaola has used the aina as a classroom to connect keiki, families, and schools to Hawaiian culture. Through hands-on place-based learning, native plant and stream restoration, and environmental education, the organization strengthens the pilina between people and the land.

Two decades ago, much of Waipao was impacted by illegal dumping and neglect, prompting the organization’s founders and the local community to begin work to restore the ecosystem.

“Seeing this place of Waipao, 63 acres that we’re leasing from Kamehameha Schools—it was an illegal dump site. Just really seeing what it was and having that vision to see what it could be. So, 20 years of hard work, working hands, and people in the community coming together, we get to celebrate them tomorrow,” Roberts said.

For those who want to get involved beyond the event, Papahana Kuaola also hosts community volunteer opportunities on the third and fourth Saturdays of every month.
