First Alert Forecast: Lovely trades this weekend and keeping an eye on the tropics
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii’s weather stays pretty quiet for the next several days, with breezy trade winds continuing well into next week. Most areas will stay warm, dry and comfortable, with only limited showers focused mainly over windward and mauka slopes.

A strong area of high pressure north of the islands is keeping the trade winds going, with some stronger gusts around higher terrain, ridgelines and through the usual windier valleys and channels. Most showers will be brief and light, with rainfall totals generally just a few hundredths of an inch.
By around Wednesday, we could see a noticeable increase in showers as more moisture gets pulled into the trade wind flow from the direction of California. That could make the weather pattern wetter, especially for windward and mauka areas.
And we’re watching the tropics closely.
Tropical Storm Lowell is the main system of interest right now. The National Hurricane Center expects Lowell to strengthen into a hurricane this weekend. It’s currently about 1,500 miles southeast of Hilo, but weak steering currents are making the forecast track especially uncertain.

Some long-range models bring Lowell toward the islands next week, but there’s still a lot of uncertainty, and most ensemble members currently do not bring the storm close to Hawaii.
So, there’s no immediate threat, but Lowell is definitely a system we’ll be watching closely as we head toward the Labor Day weekend. Hoping for the Fujiwhara effect where Lowell possibly could be absorbed by Karina, but it is too early to say for sure. Next week, models should have a better handle on it all.
