Hawaii Nepalese community reacts to deadly flooding in Nepal

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii’s Nepalese community is closely monitoring catastrophic flooding in Nepal.

More than 600 people are confirmed dead after flooding near the China border, while about 2,500 people, including Americans and other foreign nationals, remain missing.

Experts believe the disaster may have been caused by a glacier collapse.

Dinesh Timilsina, president of the Society of Nepalese in Hawaii, said the tragedy is hitting the local community hard.

“So this tragedy feels very personal,” Timilsina said. “Right now I think the community focuses on rescue and finding those who are still missing and making sure the survivors have plenty of food, shelter and basic necessities.”

He called it a difficult and emotional time for the community.

The Society of Nepalese in Hawaii said it is continuing to monitor the situation and plans to share ways the community can support relief efforts in Nepal.
