According to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity, an employee at the warehouse reportedly saw an opossum inside a shipping container around 7:45 p.m., on Tuesday.

The employee then sealed the container and alerted staff at the DAB Animal Holding Facility at HNL.

Staff members notified biosecurity inspectors from DAB’s Plant Quarantine Branch, who responded within an hour.

Since the shipping container was fully loaded when the animal was spotted, staff were unable to capture it immediately.

Staff placed traps with food and water into the container and resealed it.

The next morning, staff checked the container and found the animal in one of the traps.

Per animal and human health protocol, the opossum was humanely euthanized, and a tissue sample is being sent to the mainland for rabies testing.
