First Alert Forecast: Summertime bliss, waves and sunshine through the weekend

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – It’s hard to imagine a better forecast for tomorrow and through the weekend. The trade winds will be breezy, the sky sunny and blue, just a few showers mainly windward and mauka, and the south-side surf will be going off!

The current south swell has the National Weather Service calling 6-8 feet. A new swell next Tuesday will likely trigger a High Surf Advisory. That requires a forecast of 10 feet on south shores.

Two new tropical storms formed overnight in the East Pacific. They are Lowell and Karina. Both are forecast to move to the west and strengthen to Category 2 hurricanes. Lowell is getting our attention first though… it’s closer and expected to approach the islands from the southeast. Karina has a more northerly track and is forecast to dissipate before it gets to the Central Pacific.

At 11:00am this morning Hawaii time, T.S. Lowell was about 1600 miles east southeast of Hilo. It had winds of 40 mph and was moving east north east at 5 mph. Yeah, I know ENE! But the National Hurricane Center forecast track has it making a U-turn later today and setting its sights on the Central Pacific. The NHC forecast has it a Category 2 hurricane and about 600 miles to the ESE of Hilo next Wednesday morning.
